What is Rekeying?
A lot of the times, people want to increase the security level of their homes but would prefer not to change their locks. Luckily there is a solution for that and it is the rekey process. Rekeying a lock means to change the working key of the lock to a different key, without replacing the lock itself. In simpler words – you keep the same lock but the old key will no longer operate it. When you rekey locks, you replace the tumbler in the lock cylinder. You also receive a new key that matches the new tumbler. While you could replace the entire door lock, rekeying is typically more affordable. There are a lot of reasons why you should rekey your locks but here are the 4 most common reasons to do so.
1. Moving to a new home
When moving into a new home it would be a very smart choice to rekey your locks. You don’t know who has a copy of the same key or how many do. The only way to know that you are the only one to have access to your home would be to either change your locks or do the smarter choice of rekeying locks.
2. Lost your keys
When you lose your keys, one wonders where could they be or whose hands they could have ended up in. For your safety it would be smart to change the locks but in most cases people don’t want to go through the trouble of changing it so all you need is a rekeying which will restore the previous key useless and provide you with a new interior locking system with a new key.
3. To prevent a burglary
Your home is a place where you should feel safe and secure. It’s really not a good feeling when someone breaks into your home and steals your things. Rekeying your locks on your home will prevent you from feeling that you and your property have been violated.
4. Use an existing key
When you want the lock to open with a different existing key—say, so you no longer want to use separate keys to enter the front, side, and back doors—the lock must be disassembled and the pins, which are of various heights, removed and replaced by new pins that match the cuts and grooves in the new key.
